Starting Hand Selection — Online Poker for Beginners
Starting hand selection is the most important pre-flop decision in online poker. Play fewer, stronger hands and your bankroll survives longer. Use this at Baatryn Öröö Hold'em tables.
Simple rule
Beginners: tight and aggressive — fold weak hands, bet/raise strong ones.
- Tight = play fewer hands
- Aggressive = raise good hands, don't limp trash
Premium hands (play most positions)
| Hand | Action |
|---|---|
| AA, KK, QQ, JJ | Almost always |
| AK, AQ | Most positions |
| TT, 99 | Middle and late position |
| 77, 88 | Late position or button only |
Position matters
- Early position — only AA–KK, AK
- Middle — add QQ, JJ, AQ
- Button — wider range, still no junk
- Big blind — you already invested — defend wisely
Hands to fold (beginners)
- Unconnected low cards: K2, Q5, J8
- Weak ace offsuit from early: A2, K7
- Suited connectors sometimes — not as a default for new players
Omaha note
Four cards = many more combinations. Learn Hold'em first — Hold'em vs Omaha.
