Preflop Strategy — Position and Ranges

Префлоп стратеги — позицийн range

Preflop strategy covers every decision before the flop is dealt. Correct ranges plus good position = profitable play over thousands of hands. At Baatryn Öröö Hold'em tables, preflop is where most beginners leak money.

Fix preflop and postflop gets easier. Play trash hands and you face tough decisions on every street.

Why preflop matters

  • 70%+ of hands end before the flop
  • Weak preflop hands lose money postflop even when you hit something
  • Positional advantage starts with which hands you open

Foundation: starting hand selection + table position in poker.

What is a range?

A range is the set of hands you play in a given spot. Example: opening 25% from the button = a wide range including suited connectors and broadways. Opening 10% from UTG = premium pairs and strong aces only.

Thinking in ranges beats guessing "what does he have?" one hand at a time.

Ranges by position

Position Open range (approx.) Notes
UTG 10–12% Tightest — 9 players behind
MP 14–18% Medium
CO 22–28% Wide
BTN 35–45% Widest — only blinds left
SB Special 3-bet or fold vs opens
BB Defense Call based on pot odds

Open raise sizing

Standard: 2.5–3 BB + 1 BB per limper. Example: 3 limpers → open to 6–7 BB total.

  • UTG: premium hands only (AA–JJ, AK, AQ)
  • CO/BTN: steal with weaker suited hands
  • Adjust sizing vs loose callers — they need a bigger price to fold

3-bet strategy

When someone opens and you re-raise, that is a 3-bet.

  • Value 3-bet: AA, KK, QQ, AK — build pots with the best hands
  • Bluff 3-bet: A5s, KQs, suited blockers — when you have position

Beginners should cut bluff 3-bets. Focus on value and fold weak hands to 3-bets.

Call vs fold

Call when:

  • Pot odds justify it (especially BB defense)
  • Position is strong (button, cutoff)
  • Multiway pot potential with suited connectors

Fold is often the best play. Folding saves more money than any fancy bluff.

Defending the big blind

You already invested 1 BB. Defend vs small opens with hands that flop well: suited aces, broadways, pairs. Do not defend trash just because you have a discount.

Practical rules

  1. From UTG open AA–JJ, AK, AQ only (tight table)
  2. From the button play more hands, but not 72o
  3. Do not open hands you cannot defend vs a 3-bet
  4. Track 50 hands per session — watch VPIP and PFR (poker statistics)
  5. Review postflop basics for what to do after you raise

Common mistakes

  • Playing every hand (VPIP 50%+)
  • Opening K9o from UTG
  • Calling 3-bets without a plan
  • Ignoring position
  • Limping instead of raising (weak image)

FAQ

What VPIP should I aim for?

Beginners: 18–25%. Intermediate: 22–28%. Higher on active tables if you adjust.

Should I limp?

Usually open raise is better. Limping often signals a weak player and invites multiway pots.

Preflop in Omaha?

Omaha ranges differ — more suited aces, double-suited hands. Master Hold'em preflop first.

What about 4-bets?

Use with premiums or as polarized bluffs. Only when you understand 3-bet calling ranges.

Preflop at 250/500

At micro stakes, opponents call wide and 3-bet rarely. Tighten opens from UTG. Value-bet strong hands when you get callers.

Track VPIP and PFR over 500+ hands. VPIP above 30% often means too loose. PFR below 10% means too passive.

Pair study with postflop basics. Raising preflop without a flop plan wastes chips.

Button vs blinds: Open wider, steal when folds are likely.

BB defense: Call with suited hands and pairs that flop well. Fold junk offsuit broadways.

Log confusing preflop spots weekly. At 250/500 on Baatryn Öröö, patterns repeat — tight UTG opens, loose button steals, passive blinds.
