3-Bet and 4-Bet — Preflop Aggression
3-bet means re-raising an open raise. 4-bet means re-raising a 3-bet. These are the biggest preflop pots in Hold'em. At Baatryn Öröö 9-max tables, preflop decisions — especially 3-bets and 4-bets — shape most of your long-term win rate.
Most beginners open and call too much. Adding a disciplined 3-bet game puts pressure on loose openers, builds big pots with premium hands, and forces opponents to make tough folds. Done badly, 3-bets burn money fast. This guide covers when and how to use them.
What is a 3-bet?
Action flow: blinds → someone opens → you raise → that is a 3-bet (the open was the first raise, the 3-bet is the third bet in the sequence including the big blind).
3-bets serve two purposes:
- Value — get worse hands to put money in with you
- Bluff — make better hands fold preflop
Balance both over time. If you only 3-bet AA, observant opponents fold everything except premiums.
Types of 3-bet
| Type | Hands | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Value | AA, KK, QQ, AK | Get weaker hands to commit chips |
| Bluff | A5s, KQs, 76s | Fold equity + blocker potential |
| Merge | TT, AQ | Mix of value and bluff — harder to read |
Value 3-bets are your bread and butter. Bluff 3-bets add pressure but need position and fold equity to work.
Position matters
- EP 3-bet — very tight (AA–KK, AK only at tough tables)
- BTN vs CO open — wider bluff range — you have position postflop
- BB 3-bet — defense + value — you already invested 1 BB
Position changes everything. A 3-bet from the button with 76s is standard; the same play from UTG is a leak.
Read table position in poker + preflop strategy before expanding your 3-bet range.
3-bet sizing
- In position (IP): 3× the open
- Out of position (OOP): 3.5–4× the open
- Example: 3 BB open → 9–10 BB 3-bet OOP, 9 BB IP
Larger sizing OOP compensates for acting first postflop. You want folds or a heads-up pot where you can c-bet with initiative.
Against loose callers, size up. Give them a bad price to continue with dominated hands.
4-bet strategy
A 4-bet is a re-raise against a 3-bet. These pots are large — proceed carefully.
- Value 4-bet: AA, KK (sometimes QQ, AK depending on opponent)
- Bluff 4-bet: A5s, KQs — low frequency only
- Sizing: 20–25% of stack or all-in at 100 BB effective
Beginners should cut 4-bet bluffs. When you 4-bet, have a premium or do not do it. Bluff 4-bets require deep reads and fold equity against aggressive 3-bettors.
Facing a 4-bet? Your options narrow fast: fold most of your 3-bet bluff range, call with QQ+/AK if stacks are deep enough, 5-bet jam only with AA/KK at most tables.
Calling a 3-bet
Not every 3-bet deserves a 4-bet or fold. Calling is correct with:
- Pocket pairs (22–99) — set mining when implied odds are good
- Suited connectors — when you have position and deep stacks
- AQ, JJ — from position against a wide 3-bettor
Fold most weak hands. Calling 3-bets with K9o or Q8s out of position bleeds chips. Use starting hand selection as your filter.
Stack depth matters: at 100 BB, set mining with 22–66 needs roughly 15:1 implied odds. Shallow stacks make calling 3-bets with small pairs unprofitable.
3-bet pots postflop
A 3-bet pot is smaller relative to stacks — SPR (stack-to-pot ratio) is lower. That means:
- Top pair is often strong enough to stack off
- Draws need to be nutted — second-best flush draws lose big
- C-bet strategy still applies — the 3-bettor usually has range advantage
Plan your postflop line before you 3-bet. Know whether you will c-bet most flops or check back marginal hands IP.
Practical rules
- Start with value 3-bets only — AA–QQ, AK
- Add bluff 3-bets on BTN and CO first
- 4-bet = premium or do not bother (as a beginner)
- Track 3-bet frequency — 5–8% is typical for a solid reg
- Protect your bankroll — 3-bet pots are volatile
Common mistakes
- 3-betting too wide from early position
- Calling 3-bets OOP with junk — dominated hands lose big pots
- 4-bet bluffing without fold equity
- Same 3-bet size vs all positions
- Ignoring opponent tendencies — fold to 3-bets from nits, widen vs stations
FAQ
Should I call every hand vs a 3-bet?
No. Folding is correct most of the time. Only continue with hands that have playability, position, or strong raw equity.
What about squeeze plays (3-bet over a call)?
Squeezing is a special tactic — 3-betting when there is an open plus one or more callers. It adds fold equity because multiple players might fold. Learn basic 3-bets first, then study squeezes.
How does 3-bet strategy connect to Omaha?
This article focuses on Hold'em. Omaha rules use different hand values — 3-bet ranges are tighter because equities run closer.
